Yoda, an old Jedi Master, lived his final years hiding out on Dagobah. Yoda was very powerful with the force and at nine hundred years old, he had trained Jedi for over eight centuries.

During the time just before the downfall of the Old Republic, Yoda was a highly respected senior member of the Jedi Council. Yoda had a very important role in the Council. He trained the youngest jedi prospects before they moved up to be a padawan learner around their teenage years.

Yoda was very concerned during the final years of the Republic. The dark side clouded the jedi's insight, keeping them off balance. When Obi-Wan Kenobi was sent out to investigate on an assassination attempt on a senator the Jedi revealed disturbing news. The Confederacy of Independent Systems was building a massive droid army. But before that was revealed Kenobi discovered a clone army, in the completing stages of production, had been secretly created for the Republic. The Jedi Council knew nothing of the army, and the Kaminoans told them a past jedi named Sifo-Dyas had carried out the order, without the Council's permission.

Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was granted emergency powers to take action with the clone army against the CIS. Yoda then left to Kamino to gather up the clone army while Made Windu and two hundred other jedi went to Geonosis to rescue Kenobi, and stop the Confederacy's war machine before it was ready. When Yoda arrived with the clone army on Geonosis, there were few Jedi left. Yoda oversaw the battle from the forward command center, acting as a general. The clone army easily defeated the Confederacy's Battle Droid army while Dooku attempted to escape. Kenobi and Anakin pursued Dooku but were both wounded to the point where they couldn't fight any more. Yoda followed his instincts to the hangar where Dooku was and faced off with him. Dooku first hurled obstacles at Yoda with the force which he blocked. Then Dooku used sith lightning which Yoda deflectedback at him. They engaged in a light saber duel next. However, Dooku escaped only because he forced a pillar to fall over on top of Kenobi and Skywalker. Doing just what Dooku expected him to do, Yoda stopped to save his younger compatriots.

Although the Republic defeated the Confederacy in the Battle of Geonosis, Yoda was troubled. Many Jedi had died and they were very unsure of their situation. The dark side clouded the Jedi's vision. Plus, the nature of death was unclear to Yoda now. During a meditation period Yoda had heard the voice of Qui-Gon Jinn, a Jedi who had passed away ten years ago. He heard the voice when Anakin gave in to his anger and hate on Tatooine when he wiped out the Tusken Raider camp. It was impossible for a Jedi to keep his identity after becoming one with the Force, but he had heard it.

When the Empire arose and exterminated all the Jedi, Yoda went into hiding on Dagobah. He then waited there until "A New Hope" would arise. Three years after the Battle of Yavin, the new hope arrived, as Luke Skyalker was lead to Dagobah by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Luke arrived and began training to be a Jedi, but was a difficult student. Luke failed many of the tests Yoda put him up to, and was very impatient.

When Yoda taught Luke to farsee into the future, Luke had a disturbing vision. He saw his friends, Han, Leia, and Chewie in pain. Luke then abandoned his training to go rescue his friends. Yoda and Kenobi warned him not to go and fall into Darth Vader's trap. Luke failed, and ended up being rescued himself. But, he went anyway, promising to return to complete his training. Yoda feared that everything would be lost in their effort to stop Vader and the Emperor.

Luke returned about a year later to complete his training. After confronting Vader, Yoda told him that his training was complete. While Luke was gone, Yoda had become ill. When Luke returned he was dying. Yoda's final words told Luke that "There is another Skyalker." He barely managed to finish his sentence just before he passed away, as his body disappeared and he became one with the force. Luke later found out that Leia Organa was his sister and that he would bring his father back from the dark side. Then at the celebration after the Battle of Endor, Luke saw the ghostly images of Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker, his father, who had also become on with the force.
